Cargo handling disruption at Chennai airport leaves exporters in a fix

Chennai: Repeated disruptions of cargo handling at the Chennai Airport has hit trade causing financial losses to exporters.

In the last 18 months, employees of the ground handling agent (GHA) Bhadra International India have stopped work or indulged in go-slow six times. The last occasion was on Saturday night when they resorted to ‘industrial’ action at the peak of cargo handling between 11 pm and 6 am, according to J Krishnan of S Natesa Iyer & Co, a freight forwarding agency.

LR Joshi, General Manager (Cargo), AAI, Chennai Airport/SR, informed the Board of Airline Representatives (BAR), an airline industry body, that it will take some time to resolve the issue. He urged airport users, airlines, IATA agents and Customs House Agents to bring in the requisite manpower while Bhadra makes alternate arrangements.

The BAR replied how could the airline fraternity mobilise resources at the last hour.
