Ahmedabad: After the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) listed Ahmedabad among the worse five airports in the country in terms of bird-hits, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) has decided to continue with the traditional method of scaring away the birds using crackers and laser guns.
The AAI has floated a tender of Rs33 crore, inviting agencies to take steps to keep the birds away from the city airport. The DGCA had compiled a list of 18 airports where the wildlife hazard is the worst. Apart from the six metros, same major cities like Udaipur, Cochin, Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar and Nagpur figured in the list.
The DGCA later formed teams to inspect these 18 airports by December 20. Safety pilots from airlines will accompany the regulatory team on these checks. The five worst airports will be inspected by DGCA's head of safety, Lalit Gupta, said officials.
