Airport e-surveillance system nets first catch

Mumbai: The first airport perimeter electronic surveillance system in the country made its maiden catch this week when it detected an intrusion from the Kalina end.

For two weeks, the Perimeter Intrusion Detection System has been on test along along 10.8 km of the airport boundary, which is hemmed in by slums. On Tuesday it picked up a man scaling the walls.

"Around 6.35 pm, the system set off an alarm alerting us to an intruder trying to gain entry into the airport from the Kalina side," an official said on condition of anonymity. "It was a specific alert, giving us the exact location. The CISF ground staff posted in the zone caught the intruder and he was handed over to the airport police."

The intruder was a mentally unstable man, said the official.

"He was naked and had no recollection of how he got there," the official said. "A Jogeshwari resident, he is now in a Thane hospital."
