Ahmedabad: There was utter chaos at Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Monday when Air India cancelled its Ahmedabad- Mumbai-London flight after the passengers had boarded the aircraft. The reason given was that pilot's duty hour had got over. Around 150 passengers had arrived at the airport around 1 am for the scheduled 4 am 'Air India131' flight only to be told that the flight had been delayed by 30 minutes.
However, they were asked to board the aircraft and then told that the flight will take off at 4.40 am. According to passengers, they were given breakfast in the aircraft but the flight did not take off. Around 7.30 am officials asked them to disembark as the flight had been cancelled. Many passengers waited in the parking bay near the aircraft to know the reason. It is then that they got to know that the pilot's 12-hour shift had ended.
They waited there to speak to Air India officials and some children and old-aged people had to sleep on the tarmac despite the early morning winter chill. Prushan Shah, a 54-year-old businessman, said, "The scheduled departure of the Ahmedabad-Mumbai-London flight was 4 am. We were told that the flight's departure was delayed by half-an-hour. It was later delayed till 4.40 am and they further failed to work out the departure timing."
