Flyers made to wait 7 hours inside plane

Kolkata: Passengers booked on a Jet Airways flight to Kolkata from Delhi on Sunday evening had to remain cooped up in the aircraft for seven hours as fluctuating fog conditions repeatedly thwarted takeoff.

The flight, scheduled to depart at 8.50pm, finally took off around 4am when the fog lifted for a while and visibility improved.

The all-night wait, sitting in conditions meant for short-haul flights, put flyers' nerves on edge. Actress and filmmaker Churni Ganguly, who was on the plane, said the nightmare seemed unending as they could not get off or stretch their legs. "A two-hour flight became a nine-hour ordeal, long enough for one to reach Europe. True, the fog was so dense that the pilot's takeoff attempts were foiled. But the airline should have taken an early call and cancelled the flight rather than keep passengers and crew up all night," said Churni, who was returning with the best film award at Delhi International Film Festival for her directorial debut 'Nirbashito'.
