Flyers pay for choosing broke SpiceJet

New Delhi:  Travellers with SpiceJet tickets face tremendous uncertainty as the strapped airline is unable to pay for jet fuel and operate flights. On Wednesday, the low cost carrier's entire fleet remained grounded till 3.30pm as the planes had no fuel to fly. By the end of the day, the airline expected to operate up to 75 flights out of the schedule of 239 flights.

Passengers were stranded at all airports across the country, with violence being reported at many airports like Delhi and Mumbai as grounded flyers vented their ire at airline staffers. Sensing public mood, airline staff vanished from a number of airports. Flyers of cancelled flights were forced to buy tickets on the spot at high fares. On many metro sectors, business class was the only option available to flyers to fly on Wednesday.
Oil companies have 'declined' aviation ministry's request to give jet fuel on credit to the LCC and the same is being given only against cash payment. Banks too are unlikely to lend Rs 600 crore (as requested by the aviation ministry) to the airline unless the promoter, Sun Group chief Kalanithi Maran, gives a personal bank guarantee.
