Steep rise in air fares after SpiceJet grounds flights

Madurai:  The cancellation of SpiceJet flights from here has hit the travelling public and agents severely as air tickets on other airlines for one-way between Madurai and Chennai are sold as much as Rs 18,000. Alarmed by this, many travel and trade organisations are pleading with major airlines to operate more flights to handle the traffic.

According to a leading travel agent, Jet Airways sold its tickets for nearly Rs 12,000 for a one-way ticket to Chennai. Madurai airport has eight flights operating from here on a daily basis with 80% occupancy. The total capacity of all the aircrafts operating from the city put together is 980 and everyday not less than 700 passengers fly out of Madurai and vice versa. Air India and Jet Airways flights that operated out of Madurai on Wednesday had full occupancy, according to him.

Apart from Air India, only SpiceJet had bigger aircrafts with a seating capacity of 180 with three flights a day. Now, there is a shortfall of 540 seats that can be rectified only by operating a bigger Boeing aircrafts.
