Fog, SpiceJet crisis hit flight operations at IGI

New Delhi:  More flight operations at IGI Airport were hit by fog on Wednesday morning. Visibility dropped to zero on the runways on Wednesday, causing delays in operations of 76 flights. A total of 16 flights were also cancelled, though 14 of them were operated by SpiceJet the reason for the non-functioning of which was 'airline operational issues', said DIAL, the airport operator. No flights coming to Delhi were diverted on Wednesday.

Visibility started dropping at the runways about 3.20 early on Wednesday, when visibility was reported to be around 2,000 metres. This is the time several international flights reach Delhi. By 5, visibility dropped to 200 meters and, in another hour, till 7.30 visibility remained near zero. A total of nine departures and seven arrivals were cancelled, though DIAL, the airport operator, claimed all cancellations were due to reasons other than fog.

"Eight of the nine cancellations in departures happened due to airline operational reasons in SpiceJet airlines and one Air India flight was cancelled because of bad weather at destination. Of the seven cancellations in arrivals, six were SpiceJet flights and one Air India flight couldn't take off due to bad weather at source," said a DIAL spokesperson.
