Grounded, flyers let fly at SpiceJet

Kolkata: Cash-strapped SpiceJet that has drastically slashed flights out of Kolkata to rein in losses kept passengers on one of its few operational routes — Kolkata-Bagdogra — waiting for four hours on Wednesday before announcing that the 40-minute flight stood cancelled.

Passengers contested the airline's claim that there was first a technical fault and then weather had deteriorated at Bagdogra to point out that other flights had operated to north Bengal all afternoon and that the airline made a sham of preparing for the flight when there was no intent.

The low-cost carrier has slashed the number of daily flights out of Kolkata to only nine from 26. While the airline has claimed the flight withdrawals are temporary, the DGCA has barred it from making long-term advance bookings.
