'IndiGo may order more planes'

New Delhi: In a possible fallout of drastic fleet reduction by SpiceJet, IndiGo has indicated to the aviation ministry that it may either order (buy) or lease more aircraft. IndiGo, which is India's largest domestic airline (by passenger carriage), already has 530 Airbus A-320s worth $48 billion on order with an option for 100 more planes worth $10.2 billion.

"IndiGo has told us that it will formally submit a proposal for inducting more planes. They have not so far told us if they will take those planes on order or lease them. We will have clarity on the issues only when IndiGo gives their proposal," said a senior official.

low cost carrier (LCC) IndiGo had in mid-October placed the largest ever order of single aisle planes in one go when it booked 250 A-320 neo (new engine option) worth $25.5 billion. The LCC also got purchase rights for another 100 A-320 neos, which it can choose to exercise in coming years.
