Loo-dicrous isse irks airport visitors

Ahmedabad: Built at a cost of Rs 290 crore, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport should have been the ultimate in luxury, a la Changi Airport in Singapore. Instead, relatives of passengers who arrive at the domestic terminal have a harrowing time as it lacks basic amenities like benches and washrooms. The terminal covers an area of 4.5 lakh sq ft but the only washrooms here are inside the building which relatives can access only if they buy an entry ticket worth Rs 60: a steep price to pee. People are forced to relieve themselves in the open a few yards away from the arrival gate as they do not have access to washrooms. This space is just a few feet away from the parking lot.

Anyone peeing in the space can easily be spotted by those parking their cars. Paresh Patel, a 45-year-old businessman from Satellite, had come to pick his clients arriving from Kolkata. Patel has a kidney stone and cannot hold his urine for long. "I looked around for toilets but there was none accessible to non-passengers. I then spotted some people slinking towards the open space and I followed them. To my relief, they had gone there to pee." He added, "The airport authorities are right in tightening security and not allowing people access to the terminal.
