Rourkela Airstrip Set to Get Refuelling Facility in 2 Months

Rourkela: The Civil Aviation Ministry has decided to equip the Rourkela airstrip with refuelling facility through bowser (tanker) in two months raising hopes of restoration of commercial flight services.

Speaking to a delegation of Rourkela Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI), Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan stated about his recent meeting with Union Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapati Raju who agreed to send a team of Airport Authority of India (AAI) to explore the  possibilities to resume commercial flights and takeover of the air-strip from Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) of SAIL.

Various groups, over the past seven years, have been making efforts to resume flight operations from here.

In September 2007, a three-member AAI team visited the RSP air-strip at the initiative of former MP Dilip Ray. After a survey the team recommended immediate resumption of ATR type aircraft operations with minor modifications in the air-strip.

After becoming Rourkela legislator, Ray again took up the issue and urged Pradhan to provide a DGCA-approved bowser of 12,000-litre capacity with arrangement of Aviation Turbine Fuel supply by IOCL.
