SMC claims to have removed all cowsheds from airport’s vicinity

Surat: Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) on Thursday claimed that the area surrounding the airport has been cleared off the cowsheds on private and government lands to curb the menace of stray cattle.

The municipal corporation had swung into action after November 6 when a buffalo hit a Spice Jet plane carrying 170 passengers on the runway. The airport authorities had blamed the presence of cowsheds in the vicinity.

Official sources said around nine cowsheds located in the surrounding area of the airport have been removed since November 6. On Thursday, two cowsheds were removed from private lands located just opposite the airport premises. The cowshed owners were asked to shift their cattle heads to some other place outside the city limits. At least seven cowsheds, which were located close to the airport walls on government land, had also been removed in the past 20 days.
