New Delhi: The Centre has stepped up security in all major airports across the country after intelligence alerts about a possible hijack attempt on Air India planes bound for Kabul in Afghanistan.
Anti-hijacking mechanisms were put in place at major airports, including the Indira Gandhi International Airport here, on Sunday.
Air India spokesperson G P Rao said the national carrier’s control room in Kolkata had on Saturday received a call from an unknown person who said that a Kolkata-Kabul flight would be hijacked, but it was later declared to be a hoax call.
“We have not received any official input from intelligence agencies about any threat to Delhi-Kabul flights. But checks are on,” said Rao. However, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) which looks after the airport’s internal security has been asked to be alert and keep a watch on the activities of the travellers. “Flights going to Afghanistan are being monitored carefully,” said CISF spokesperson Hemendra Singh, adding that security had been tightened for the past two months.
Besides, Delhi Police was also put on alert.
