The Indian airline industry may be in the red with SpiceJet's current downward trajectory and Kingfisher shutting shop, but domestic demand in air travel is on the rise. There has been a greater increase in passenger capacity as Indian carriers added a large number of flights on domestic routes.
According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation data, released in October, air passengers grew from 45.5 million in September 2013 to 58.2 million for the same month, in 2014. This growth in air passenger number is the highest in the current calendar year at around 30.3%. Last year in June, saw a 16.1% increase in passenger traffic and; 20.6% and 19.9% in October and November respectively.
According to a Times of India report, India had the strongest annual growth in 2012 with the domestic air travel demand rising 16.4% and this seems to be a continuing trend.
To counter this arising surge, Air India has deployed wide-body Boeing 777-300 aircraft on the busy Delhi-Mumbai-Delhi sector to create additional capacity during the Christmas season. Larger aircraft are manning its Delhi-Dubai-Delhi sector and flights to Goa to bring in more supply in these key sectors.
