Continuing fog hits services at Chennai airport

Chennai:  With visibility levels plummeting to less than 100 metres around dawn since the last two days, air traffic at the Chennai airport continues to be fogged out in the city.

Several early morning flights departed after a lengthy delay while as many as seven flights were diverted and a few landed a couple of hours late.

Meteorological department officials predicted that early morning fog will continue at least until February 15, attributing it to the seasonal drop in temperatures and higher levels of humidity.

“This is a routine phenomenon. In 2013, fog persisted for about 17 days while in 2014 similar conditions prevailed for around 11 days. Therefore, the drop in visibility just before sunrise is expected,” said an official.
