Gold Haul at CIAL: CBI Takes Over Probe

Kochi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday registered case against four persons, including two police sub-inspectors who were on deputation at the Immigration Wing of the Nedumbassery Airport, in connection with a recent gold smuggling incident. The policemen, along with the person who tried to smuggle gold and a travel agent, were arrested by the Preventive Unit of the Customs Department the other day.

According to CBI officials, case has been registered against sub-inspectors Manu and Krishnakumar; Ijas, carrier of the gold consignment, and travel agent Rasheed.

 It is alleged that the police officials helped the smugglers in transporting gold consignments via the Nedumbassery airport.

The case was registered under various Sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Corruption Act. “Manu and Krishnakumar had been on deputation from the Kerala Police at the Immigration Wing of the Airport for more than one year. As per preliminary reports, they facilitated the smuggling of gold on three occasions in the last one month. It is alleged that the smugglers used to pay `20,000 each to the police officials for smuggling on kg of gold. Around 12 kg of gold was smuggled with the assistance of the police officials,” the CBI officials said.
