Mumbai: Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the proposed Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) would be operational from 2019 with the Centre helping in speeding up the project.
Mr Fadnavis was addressing a summit organised by the Maharashtra Industries and Economic Development Association. “The Centre has given necessary nods to speed up the proposed NMIA. We have a plan to make it operational from 2019,” he said.
At a programme held in Vile Parle earlier this month, Mr Fadnavis had said, “After completion of the first phase, 10 million people are expected to use the NMIA annually. The final phase will see a capacity of 60 million passengers annually.” He had further tweeted that in lieu of the rise in passengers, Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport too would be extended to accommodate 40 million passengers annually.
At the summit, the chief minister also spoke of his government’s plans to minimise traffic congestion in western Mumbai through construction of the proposed coastal road from Churchgate to Kandivali which would start very soon.
