SpiceJet may lay off up to 1,000 staff

A large number of employees of the struggling airline SpiceJet may be served the pink slip in the next couple of weeks in a bid to rationalise its costs.

Though no numbers are given, speculation is that around 900-1,000 employees may face the axe in the coming weeks. SpiceJet did not comment when asked about plans to serve termination notices to a section of its around 5,000 employees.

Sources said that it has become unviable for the airline to retain the employees as its fleet strength had been reduced to 17 Boeings from 35. The airline also has 15 Bombardier Q400 aircraft.
