Surat airport may get international flights

Gandhinagar: Air India will start a Rajkot-Delhi-Rajkot flight service from February 15, the state's civil aviation minister, Saurabh Patel, announced on Tuesday.

"This was a long-pending demand of Gujarat to the Centre," Patel said after a meeting with Union civil aviation minister Ashok Gajpati Raju. "People of Saurashtra had to come to Ahmedabad to catch a flight for Delhi. Soon they will be able to fly there from their local airport." As for Raju, he was in Ahmedabad to attend a review meeting on civil aviation matters pertaining to Gujarat.

Earlier this month, Gujarat became the second state in India after Madhya Pradesh to launch its own intra-state aviation service. Maritime Energy Heli Air Services Ltd (MehAir) along with the Gujarat State Aviation Infrastructure Company Limited (GUJSAIL) began operations with 20 flights per week (Monday to Friday) to Jamnagar, Bhuj, and Porbandar — to and from Ahmedabad.
