Pune: The air intelligence unit of the Pune customs arrested a Mysore woman at the Lohegaon airport for allegedly trying to smuggle gold worth over Rs 54.79 lakh from Dubai on Wednesday. The accused was produced in a local court which granted her bail against cash surety of Rs 25,000. "The accused was taken to jail as she could not furnish the cash surety in time. She is likely to be released on bail when she executes the court's directive," special public prosecutor K D Ratnaparkhi told TOI. According to a report filed by customs inspector Shubhangi S Salunkhe, the suspect, Humrath Shaheena Banu, a resident of Rajivnagar in Mysore, tried to clear herself through the green channel after submitting a nil-declaration for dutiable goods. On conducting a body search, the intelligence unit officials found three 24 carat gold chains, covered by a black adhesive tape, around Humrath's waist. The three chains were assessed by a government valuer to ascertain the price. The total weight of the three chains was 999.64 gm with a market value of Rs 54,79,010.
