Bag on plane without flyer made him wait 6 hours at IGI

New Delhi:  A passenger had to cool his heels at Delhi Airport for over six hours this Valentine's Day after missing an international flight on which his checked-bag took off without him. He was allowed to leave the airport only after the aircraft landed at its destination abroad and the bag cleared customs and security checks there.

This situation arose here on Saturday when a passenger missed his Air India flight (AI 348) to Shanghai. Last month also, AI had faced a similar situation and it had to call its Birmingham-bound aircraft back to Delhi to offload the bag of the passenger who had missed that flight.

As per international aviation security norms, no airline can carry a bag abroad without its owner accompanying the same on the aircraft.  "On Saturday, AI was faced with a similar situation of calling the flight back to Delhi. But the passenger was at the boarding gate. To avoid calling the aircraft back, the airline security requested the passenger to remain in their 'custody' — remain with them inside the airport and not under detention — till the aircraft lands in China and his bag clears all checks there. He agreed to this request and the aircraft flew to its destination without being required to return to Delhi," said a source.
