Mumbai: The Customs intercepted seven passengers who allegedly attempted to smuggle gold worth Rs 7 crore into the city on Sunday and Monday. An eighth passenger was held while allegedly attempting to sneak in foreign currency.
While four of those held are Indian nationals, there are two each from Ethiopia and Kenya.
According to a Customs officer, an Indian woman named Farida Rafiq was held on Sunday after foreign currency amounting to Rs 24 lakh was found concealed in a bath rug in her luggage. The Customs then intercepted Paramjeet Kaur and Amrit Pal Rekhi after they were found attempting to smuggle gold bangles weighing 223 grams worth Rs 5.8 lakh. The officer said another Indian passenger named Naeema Lakdawala, who had arrived from Dubai, was caught Sunday in possession of a gold items worth Rs 15 lakh.
