India needs new jets even if Rafale deal falls through, says IAF chief

As the talks between the Union Government and the French aircraft maker Dassault reach final stages in the hope of resolving the deadlock over the purchase of 126 multirole fighter jets, Indian Air Force chief Arup Raha on Thursday reiterated that the new combatants are urgently required to maintain the desired squadron strength.

The IAF chief asserted that the acquisition of medium multi-role fighters are an absolute must, even if this deal falls flat.

“Whether it is the Rafale or any other fighter, we need medium multi-role jets,” Air Chief Marshal Raha said.
