No cracker zone tag for airport

Bhubaneswar:  To ensure safety of flights at the Biju Patnaik International Airport, the authorities have declared areas on its periphery as 'no cracker zone'. Bursting of crackers near the airport might pose a potential danger to flights, official sources said.

The airport's operation area, close to its runway, is located near Gandamunda, Pokhariput, Sundarpada and Jagamara. According a survey conducted by the airport authorities, the runways look blurred when crackers are burst near it. The pilot gets confused trying to locate the runway, which has lights on both sides, as multiple lights emanate from crackers.

"Many airports in India have declared a 'no cracker zone'. We had given the details about the areas, where people were found bursting crackers during functions, to police. Pilots of all the airlines had also complained to us about the distraction caused by bursting of crackers," said airport director Sharad Kumar.
