Bangalore: Faced with a severe crew shortage, Air India has decided to get its crew who have been grounded for being overweight to operate flights for the next three months by when it hopes to have completed hiring and training new crew.
A circular issued by Air India's general manager (medical) and head of medical services Dr P C Tripathi to the regional medical heads on Friday (June 5) says, "In view of acute shortage of cabin crew, it has been decided that cabin crew with a Body Mass Index (BMI) in the range of 'overweight' are to be cleared for flying for three months at a time, provided they have got no other medical problems."
There are 37 'overweight' cabin crew in Mumbai and about 20 in Delhi. All these crew members have not been flying in batches since May 2014 after a medical examination.
