Mumbai: As many as 37 crew members in Mumbai and 20 in Delhi were grounded last year for being overweight. They will be on flights for next 3 months. Faced with a severe crew shortage, Air India (AI) has decided to get those who were grounded for being overweight back on flights for the next three months.
The airline expects to have completed the hiring and training of new crew members by then. A circular issued by Air India`s general manager (medical) and head of medical services Dr P C Tripathi on Friday stated, "In view of acute shortage of cabin crew, it has been decided that cabin crew with a Body Mass Index (BMI) in the range of `overweight` are to be cleared for flying for three months at a time, provided they have got no other medical problems." The circular was issued to the regional medical heads.
There are 37 overweight cabin crew in Mumbai and about 20 in Delhi. All these crew members have not been flying in batches since May 2014 after a medical examination. A senior Air India official said, "All medical officers are hereby instructed to follow this advice with immediate effect.
