AP govt steps up efforts to secure intl status for Gannavaram airport

Hyderabad:  The Andhra Pradesh government has intensified efforts to secure international status for Gannavaram airport near Vijayawada. The Infrastructure Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (Incap) has undertaken a survey of in-bound and out-bound domestic passenger traffic from the airport.

Once the survey is conducted, a report would be submitted to the state cabinet which is scheduled to clear the proposal to declare Gannavaram as an international airport and sent it to the Union civil aviation ministry for final clearance. The survey is being conducted by a private consultant, sources said.

Similarly, Gannavaram airport authorities have taken up a study to assess international passenger and cargo capacity from the airport. Official sources said that in united Andhra Pradesh, most international flyers travelling through Shamshabad international airport in Hyderabad are from Krishna, Guntur, East and West Godavari districts. "If direct international connectivity is made available for them, they would prefer travelling from Gannavaram instead of Hyderabad or Chennai," sources said.
