Panel to probe plaint by airport trolley porters

Panaji: Goa International Airport director Srinivas Rao has decided to institute a committee to look into complaints of harassment and extortion of trolley porters at the airport. The trolley porters had written a complaint to various authorities and had threatened to commit suicide if their complaint was not looked into.

"I have yet to find out the facts, but, since it is a fight between two parties, we will appoint a committee to look into the issue and only then will we take further action," Rao said.

Two days ago, trolley porters had written to Rao as well as the director general of civil aviation, police authorities, the labour commissioner and Human rights commission claiming that the contractor, had allegedly blackmailed the porters and was demanding 15,000 per year.

The contractor would allegedly demand 10,000 during season time and 5,000 in the off season. Failure to do so would result in the particular porter's entry permit remaining unsigned.
