Heart flown from Madurai to Chennai for transplant

Chennai: Swift action by doctors and traffic police officers in Madurai and Chennai gave a new lease of life to a patient with end-stage heart failure in the city on Wednesday. The heart of a brain dead donor was harvested in Madurai and flown to Chennai where it was transplanted into the patient. The 29-year-old donor, a native of Kollichipatti in Dindigul district, ran a tea stall near Kodai Road in Dindigul. He met with an accident on May 31 and was rushed to a private hospital in Madurai by anxious relatives.
A scan was done on his head and he was declared "brain dead" on June 2. As his other organs were functioning perfectly, doctors counselled the family members on organ donation. The victim's father N Mathiyazhagan and his cousin M Anandhavel agreed to donate his organs and also convinced other members of the family.
In Chennai, the hospital authorities contacted Madurai commissioner of police Shailesh Kumar Yadav. He immediately agreed to put the traffic on hold on the busy ring road at exactly noon to help the harvested liver and heart catch the 1.30pm Indian Airlines flight to Chennai.
