Man barges into jet, locks himself in loo as officials give chase

Mumbai: A 30-something man pushes past airport security, runs into the aircraft and locks himself up in the aircraft's lavatory. An engineering crew has to be called in to unhinge the toilet door and get the man out... It was nothing short of a nightmare for passengers travelling to Brussels from Mumbai on a Jet Airways flight some ten days back.

The drama unfolded on June 14 when Ali arrived by Jet Airways flight 9W-251 from Colombo. Abushammla Ali, a Palestinian national,  was en route to Brussels via Jet Airways flight 9W-228. He was stopped at the boarding gates by the airline staff as his travel entry documents for Belgium were not in place.

After a brief argument, Ali pushed the airport staff and darted across the aerobridge, into the aircraft and locked himself up in the washroom. Crew and security staff ran after him and kept knocking on the door but he refused to open it. Finally, Jet Airways engineering staff had to be summoned to unhinge the door from the outside and get the man out of the plane.

The flight, scheduled to depart at 2.05 am, finally took off at 4.20 am.

Some of the passengers were so traumatised by the incident that five of them chose to be offloaded and cut short their journey.
Abushammla Ali, a Palestinian national, has been detained at the Refusal Room of Mumbai Airport's integrated Terminal 2 ever since he created a ruckus on the Jet Airways flight. He is now demanding entry into Egypt and the Palestinian embassy is said to be processing his visa.
