Panel to examine PPP of Kolkata, Chennai airports

The government's move to hand over Kolkata and Chennai airports to private companies on long-term lease has come under scrutiny of a parliamentary panel of law-makers.

The parliamentary standing committee on transport, tourism and culture would take up the issue on Monday and seek reasons of privatising services at the two airports even as state-run Airport Authority of India (AAI) has started a two-stage bidding process for the projects.

"Besides privatisation of Chennai and Kolkata airports, the violent incident at Kozhikode airport in Kerala is also on the agenda of the meeting," official sources said.

Aviation ministry officials led by newly appointed aviation secretary RN Choubey would brief the panel on the issues. A section of AAI employees have opposed the government's decision to take up airport projects on PPP as AAI has already invested about Rs 5,000 crore in upgrading infrastructure at these key airports as part of its modernisation programme.
