Bengaluru: There is talk that the biennial Aero India, India’s premier air show, will be shifted from the city to Goa henceforth, but defence officials do not believe that this may be the case.
When Express contacted Wing Commander M D Singh of the Defence Exhibition Organisation, he said, “We have heard about it (deliberations on moving the show from the city to Goa). However, there is no confirmation so far.”
After the Aero India 2015 in February, there were reports that the city may not be conducive to handling a large even, giving birth to suggestions that the show may be shifted out. Reasons included the presence of high-rise buildings making landing and take-off of larger aircraft difficult and space constraints at the air base in Yelahanka for the swelling crowds. Conflict of air space with the Bangalore International Airport was also an issue. In 2012, the then chief minister of Karnataka Sadananda Gowda had written a letter to former defence minister A K Antony not to shift the show from the city.
Former chairman of the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) C G Krishnadas Nair believes that organising the air show outside the city could have positive repercussions. However, he opined that irrespective of where it takes place, Aero India needs to be organised in a better manner, and that it should not be considered as a mere profit-making event.
