Cheaper airfare gives wings to travel plans

Pune: Puneites are packing their bags to reap benefits of cheap airfares that have helped increase travel plans by 30% in August and September. Airfares to major domestic destinations have dipped by nearly 20% to 30 % in the recent past, causing an upsurge in travel, said travel industry experts.

Zelam Chaubal, owner of a city-based travel firm, said that July and August are usually lean months as far as travel is concerned. "Airlines come up with cheap airfares and schemes to increase travel in these months and they tend to get a good response from travellers too. Airfares started seeing a dip since the first week of July. Most travellers availing these offers are free independent travellers, or FITs, as well as corporates, as against group tours," Chaubal said. An FIT is a person traveling or vacationing with a self-booked itinerary.

Travel companies have seen a 15% to 30% increase in travel to domestic destinations over the same period last year, due to a reduction in airfares. Mehboob Shaikh, director of another travel firm in the city, claimed that airfares in some sectors have dipped by 30%.
