Seeking to reduce high operating cost of airlines, the civil aviation ministry has asked carriers to suggest ways for reducing airport and ground charges, which contribute nearly 8-10 per cent of their total cost.
In a meeting with scheduled carriers, Union aviation secretary RN Choubey requested executives to submit their proposals in the next few days.
According to two executives present at the meeting, the secretary has requested airlines to come out with specific suggestions clearly mentioning the provisions under which airport charges could be brought down.
“We will submit our recommendations shortly. The ministry has directed us to cite laws and provisions under which tariff reduction is possible. A meeting has to be scheduled with the airport regulator, ministry and airlines where suggestions would be discussed,” one of the executives said.
