Customs for Cofeposa against four accused

Kochi: The customs will initiate a process to detain four of the accused in the 1,500kg gold smuggling case under the Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act (Cofeposa), a preventive detention mechanism. The Muvattupuzha-based racket had smuggled gold worth over Rs 400 crore through the Cochin international airport in a period less than two years.

Officials with the special investigation and intelligence branch (SIIB) of the Customs said they would send a report to the Cofeposa board, comprising officials from various agencies and the home department. They will include Noushad of Puthupadi, civil police officer Jibin K Basheer, his brother Nibin K Basheer and father A K Basheer in the proposal.
