Ahmedabad: Revenue losses, low sales volume, and high rentals have led to the closure of as many as five shops in the domestic terminal of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport over the past six months. At a time when the city airport is being considered for modernization by the ministry of civil aviation, the shops' closure is disappointing.
The outlets which have closed include Ethos, Eternal Gandhi, the bookshop, the massage chair facility, and a jewellery shop. Shops like Eternal Gandhi, which used to sell merchandise related to the Mahatma, had opened only last year.
Interestingly, all the shops that have closed were located on the first floor of the domestic terminal from where passengers board flights using aerobridges.
Shop owners and managers claim that though the movement of passengers through the city airport has increased, sales did not pick up. "The rent is very high for the space at the airport considering the passenger traffic here," said a shop owner. "Also, at the first floor, there are four aerobridges and traffic is limited. Therefore good sales are not obtained."
