60,000 units of cigarettes seized at Jaipur airport

JAIPUR: The customs team of Jaipur airport on Saturday seized a haul of cigarettes made in Indonesia. Nearly 60,000 units of the clove-flavored cigarettes were seized while the two passengers were released after a penalty of Rs 20,000 each by the customs officials.

According to the senior officials, the passengers identified as Mohammed Aabid (27) and Sameer Ansari (37), both natives of Delhi came by Air Arabia flight on Saturday morning. "Based on suspicion we checked their baggage and hand bags. Every bag contained boxes full of cigarettes," said Honhar Singh, deputy commissioner (customs), Jaipur.

He said that usually the permissible limit is 100 unit of Cigarette for a passenger who had stayed abroad for 3 days and is returning. "If a person possesses more than 100 cigarettes and appears that he is carrying it for personal consumption he needs to pay a duty of 103 percent on it. However, in this case it was evident that this much of cigarettes was not brought for the personal use, thus was to be confiscated by our team," Singh added.
