Gold bars found abandoned on plane at Cochin International

Months after the Customs busted a gold smuggling racket with links inside the Nedumbassery airport, the route appear to be still in vogue among smugglers.

Officials of the Customs Air Intelligence Unit at the Cochin International airport here on Tuesday seized about two kilograms of gold worth Rs.53 lakhs, kept inside a flight from Abu Dhabi.

According to officials, the gold was seized from the Etihad flight, which had landed in Kochi at 3.30 a.m.

“The contraband, in the form of two gold bars in mobile phone pouches, was found hidden beneath seat number 64B of the aircraft’’, officials said.

It was first spotted by the cleaning staff while removing covers of the seat.
