HC rejects PIL against Akola airport expansion

Nagpur: The way for the much-needed expansion of Akola airport was cleared on Thursday after the Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court rejected a PIL opposing it. A division bench comprising Justice Bhushan Gavai and Justice Indira Jain refused to interfere into Maharashtra government's move to expand the existing Shivni airport and acquire Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth's (PDKV) land for it making it clear that it was "policy decision".

The court made it clear that no public interest was involved in the petitioners' case.

The court also accepted associate advocate general Rohit Deo's contentions that centre's policy of no airport between distance of 150 kms can't be applied in this case as the present one at Akola was old and operational. It clarified that such policy can only be applied to new airport like one coming up at Belora in Amravati.
