Nagpur airport has leaking roof problem

Nagpur: The Nagpur airport move to get some sunlight has left it with a leaking roof. In 2008, when the airport was revamped, it was planned have skylight systems in the roof of terminal building. The objective was to save power during daytime by using sunlight instead of electricity.
Skylight is a system in which open patches are left in the roof to be covered with a transparent polycarbonate sheet so sunlight passes through it. This does away with the need of switching on electric lights during day. However, unless the material is of standard quality, it expands during summer, leaving gaps for leakages after eventual contraction.

Officials at Mihan India Limited (MIL), the state government company that manages the airport admit the leakages are due to the inferior quality material used in the sheet. "This leads to leakage during every rainy season and the airport management has to scramble for repairs. It leaked when it rained on Wednesday night and also on Thursday. Sometimes there is no choice but to keep buckets below the leaking patch till further repairs are undertaken," said an airport source.
