Southern airlines Air Pegasus, Air Costa, FLYEasy and TruJet trying to carve a niche in India

Bengaluru-based Air Pegasus, which started in April, has three aircraft and operates eight flights linking four destinations. It is acquiring five more aircraft and targeting a total of 12-15 routes.

"We are heading to routes which are virgin routes, like Bengaluru-Hubli and Bengaluru-Madurai. We are also planning to introduce Bengaluru-Puducherry...There are a lot of other routes which remain unconnected, like Coimbatore-Tuticorin. So these regional routes are crying out for and we plan to provide it," said managing director Shyson Thomas.

A post-graduate in commerce and a chartered accountant, Thomas believes regional carriers can play a huge part in rural India in terms of connectivity and development. "We have four to five national carriers. They have more emphasis on the national-level connectivity," he said. "Hence, this is where our market lies."
