Surtis spent 500 crore on air travel

Surat: Surat's airport may have just a single flight to and from Delhi that too a modest 72-seater Alliance Air flight, but when it comes to flying around India and beyond, Surtis are top spenders. During the last financial year alone, Surtis spent more than Rs 500 crore on domestic and international air travel. According to the Travel Agent Association, there are 200 registered agents for ticket booking in Surat, with the top most doing a business of Rs 50 crore and medium level doing bookings of Rs 6-7 crore, with an average of Rs 3-4 crore in bookings per agent, which amounts to Rs 500 crore in domestic and international tickets

In the last financial year, one of Surat's leading travel agency booked 18,932 passengers for domestic flights and 22,875 passengers for international flights. Atul Gupta of Shree Sati travels said, "Surtis love to travel. The most preferred domestic destinations are Cochin, Goa, Leh, Srinagar and Port Blair for leisure and for business domestic destinations are Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai and Indore. Whereas preferred international destinations for leisure are Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Bangkok, Bali, Switzerland, Paris, Rome, Dubai and regular international destinations for business are China, Belgium, European Nation and Dubai."
