Advanced radar installed at Coimbatore airport

Coimbatore: A new radar, known as the Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B), has been installed at the Coimbatore International Airport (CIA).

This is a surveillance technology which allows an aircraft to determine its position through satellite navigation and periodically broadcast it. This allows the air traffic control ground stations to receive this information and coordinate flight landings.

This information can also be received by other aircraft in the same air space.

Coimbatore is only one of the 21 airports in the country to get this ADS-B surveillance tool.

"This radar was put in place after we got a clearance to install it from the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA)," said a senior airport official.
