Aerospace Firms Set to Take Off With RTA Programme

Chennai: The aerospace industry might have been one of the focus sectors at the GIM, but it is still a budding ecosystem. A consortium of 60 or so aerospace firms has proposed a project that, if it fructifies, would be the cornerstone around which the aviation ecosystem is built.

The project in question is the Regional Transport Aircraft programme. “This would be a small 70 seater that would specialise in ferrying passengers over short distances,” said Venkatesh Chandrasekaran, director, VinMn Aerospace -  one of the several players coming to the Chennai Aerospace Park.

“The project is envisaged as a joint effort between the governments of Karnataka, AP and Tamil Nadu. We are proposing that the governments set up an entity that would assemble the RTA,” said N Shekhar, president of the Aerospace and Defence Industry Association of Tamil Nadu, the fora that is mooting the plan.
