Air India's new international flight service from PM Modi's constituency Varanasi a security risk

New Delhi: Immigration authorities have raised security concerns over Air India's new international flight from PM's Narendra Modi's constituency, Varanasi, under the hub and spoke scheme. They have opposed AI's plans to start a similar flight from Lucknow, represented by Rajnath Singh, too, forcing the airline to formulate standard operating procedures to ensure security is not compromised.

Immigration and customs claim that security lapses have become routine in Air India's hub and spoke operations. Things came to a head on September 5 when they refused to lear a flight from Varanasi as the passenger manifest had discrepancy. The manifest had to be rectified and AI had to assure the problem would not recur before the flight was cleared.
"Either AI should cancel its hub and spoke scheme or have proper SOPs in place," said a senior home ministry official. The newly-appointed CMD of Air India, Ashwani Lohani, told ET that hub and spoke was a very good scheme and would continue. "Proper SOPs are being put in place."
