Arrested Italian smuggler an AI staffer

New Delhi: In what can turn out to be a global network of smugglers involving senior officials from reputed airlines of India, the Italian national who was arrested by the Delhi Police, has been identified as an employee of Air India, working in Rome. Sources said he was handed over the gold by a Canadian man in Milan.

Lupoli Alessandro was arrested by a joint team of Delhi Police and customs officials for allegedly trying to smuggle in gold worth Rs 80 lakh at the IGI airport on Monday. Interrogations have revealed that he was "on duty" to escort a group of Italian tourists to India when he was arrested. Alessandro, who was initially thought to be a Italian diplomat, would have easily exited the airport, had the Delhi Police not received a tip-off, and conveyed the same to the customs staff immediately.
