Airport seeks nod to catch birds

Bhubaneswar:  Birds flocking to the operational zone of Biju Patnaik International Airport pose a potential danger to flights. The airport authorities have sought permission from chief wildlife warden and principal chief conservator of forests (wildlife) S S Srivastav to catch birds straying into the operational area.

A letter sent to the top wildlife officer revealed that several measures taken to check the bird menace have not yielded results. "We surveyed the core of the operational zone with the assistance of ornithologists and forest department officers. There are bird species that pose a potential danger to flights. So, we have decided to catch birds and hand them over to the forest department as we have been doing in case of wild animals," said senior manager (air traffic control) S K Sahu.

The birds will be caught using trapping methods. "We may use cages and nets to catch birds. In the first phase, we have requested the wildlife wing of the forest department to allow us catch lapwings, black kites and grey frankolins. "If given permission, we will intimate the wildlife wing regarding catching of other varieties of birds," said airport director Sharad Kumar.
