CBI hot on trail

Thiruvananthapuram : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has launched a preliminary inquiry against a ground handling agency at the Thiruvananthapuram international airport.

It’s verifying the agency on the suspicion of having under-reported its earnings to squeeze profits, thereby denying service tax to the Union government and legitimate percentage to the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

Ground handling involves servicing aircraft after touchdown or before take-off. Major international airlines contract ground handling services to maintain their aircraft at airports where they do not have their own maintenance infrastructure.

Such agencies have to pay the AAI a percentage of their gross annual turnover as fee. The agencies also come under the Union government’s service tax net.
