Finally, hurdles cleared for upgradation of Vij airport

Hyderabad: Paving way for the upgradation of the Vijayawada airport, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has finally called for tenders to take up work on the new terminal building. The proposal on airport expansion has been pending for several years.

The new terminal building will be ready by December next year.

The work will be executed on design and build basis. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 137 crore. The AAI has identified about five acres after obtaining permission from the forest department.

The AP government turned its attention to the Vijayawada airport after the bifurcation. The airport will serve the new capital city Amaravati.

The new terminal is an interim arrangement as it will be converted into a cargo terminal once the AAI builds a swanky permanent terminal building of international standards after acquiring land from farmers under LPS.
